O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton and went to Wheaton North School. She was a graduate in 1981. The model was featured on several commercials on television, but then moved from Illinois to Los Angeles. Her career O'Grady began her career as models for Montgomery Ward, and well performing commercials in a variety of ways. She made her big screen debut in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and later was cast in recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest as a guest on independent films as well as television series. Donna Abandando played her first lead role in ABC's NYPD Blue, a police drama. O'Grady was the large-haired squad secretary from 1993 to 1996, and for each year received the Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series. Together with her cast she was awarded an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Best Performance of an Ensemble in Drama Series.
