O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early part of 2005, when she was still a high school student. She made it to the top hundred round after the judges praised her singing ability. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. However, she was a major loser in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were horrified by this, and told the audience the fact that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once ever again. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil beat Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in history of the show. O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
